General cargo handling – with innovative tandem operation of the slewing cranes and a trimodal connection

Port of Walsum-Süd

At the port of Walsum, which is used primarily for outbound logistics, general cargo (coils, slabs, rails, billets and special cargo) is both loaded into and unloaded from inland waterway vessels, coasters and lighters. The port of Walsum has an annual handling capacity of around two million metric tons and is certified under the ISPS Code for ship and port facility security.

Among the innovative highlights of the 70,000 square-meter port area are the Rhine slewing cranes working in synchronous tandem mode. These can be operated by just one crane operator according to the master/slave principle.

One important feature of the Walsum loading bay with its capacity of approx. 20,000 metric tons is that it can also be used for storing and loading products that are particularly sensitive to moisture. The bay can handle inland waterway vessels up to 135 meters in length.
